Trainee Resident in Orthopaedics and Traumatology

           From 1996 to 1998

          Underwent a structured training program in orthopaedics and traumatology, accident & emergency services

  • Trained in taking an adequate history of orthopaedic patients, doing thorough physical examination, directing specific investigations, coming to an appropriate diagnosis, deciding the requirement of surgery, directing, communicating and explaining to the patients the indications of surgery and its complications.
  • Trained to perform minor orthopaedic operations with and without assistance and assisting major procedures, and to manage orthopaedic emergencies including acute trauma.
  • Took part in paper presentations and helped to organize symposiums, lectures, Journal club meeting and CME programs as part of the postgraduate training.
  • Help the consultant run their outpatient clinics and theatre.
  • My MS orthopaedics research project was on “A study of Management of Tibial shaft fractures with unreamed interlocking nail”

 

 

Lecturer in Orthopaedics and Traumatology

           Indira Gandhi Medical College, Nagpur, India From September 1998 to October 2001

         This is tertiary level government hospital and medical college with 700 beds in the city of Nagpur.  My responsibilities included:                                                                                                                                                       

  • Help the consultant run the outpatient department, day to day care of in-patients, pre-operative assessment & communication with patients and relatives.
  • Take care of patients both pre-and post-operatively.
  • Assist my consultant in various major orthopaedic procedures and be the first surgeon during all basic trauma surgeries and primary arthroplasties.
  • In charge of the mortality and morbidity presentations during the hospital grand rounds.
  • To conduct audits, regular seminars and weekly teaching programs.
  • To conduct workshops and conferences for orthopaedic trainees.
  • Present the departmental activities during the monthly hospital meetings.
  • To take classes for the emergency room doctors and staff regarding the orthopaedic emergencies.
  • To take classes for the postgraduate trainees, undergraduate students and nursing staff.

 

Assistant Professor in Orthopaedics

           SGRD Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Amritsar, India From December 2001 to June 2002

        This is tertiary level hospital and private medical college with 500 beds in the city of Amritsar. My responsibilities included elective and emergency patient management, and active participation in teaching programmes for undergraduate medical students, nursing staff and postgraduates.

 

Junior Consultant in Orthopaedics and Traumatology

           Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi India From July 2002 to June 2004

               This is a tertiary level corporate hospital and nursing school with 700 beds in the city of New Delhi. As a junior consultant I assisted my senior consultants in the management of elective and emergency orthopaedic work. In addition I was involved in the supervision and teaching of orthopaedic residents, registrars, nurses and students undergoing their fellowship in emergency medicine.

              I assisted senior specialist orthopaedic surgeons in advanced surgeries like joint replacements, spinal surgery, arthroscopic surgery and also management of polytrauma.

             During this tenure I was closely associated in the Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation programme of the hospital.

 

Post Graduate Student, Master of Orthopaedic Surgery (MCh Orth)

September 2004 – May 2005

This is a full time taught post graduate lecture course with departmental and visiting national lecturers. It also involves clinical postings in various orthopaedic subspecialties. The students undertake a research project in a topic of their special interest and are trained in presentation and audit skills.
The department comprises of a blend of surgeons, bioengineers and allied healthcare professionals who provide trauma surgery and specialized orthopaedic services and undertake research projects in orthopaedics and traumatology.                                                  
My ChM orthopaedics research project was “Supporting Orthopaedic Surgeons: Evaluation of Web based Statistics Resources”.

 

 

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS:
 


  • Fellow at the Centre de Traumatologie et d' Orthopedie de Strasbourg,France for a period of 6 weeks from August to September  2001, under Dr. G.Taglang for advanced training  in locked nailing.

 

  • Indo German Orthopaedic Foundation (IGOF) fellowship in Arthroplasty at Regensburg, Germany under Prof. Dr.med R. Neugebauer in August 2001.
  • Knee fellowship at the ISK institute with Dr Norman Scott, Dr Scuderi and Dr Kelly in Lenox Hill hospital, Hospital for Joint Diseases, New York for the month of September 2007.

I have been trained in lower limb arthroplasty (primary hip and knee replacements) and  especially complex primary  and revision hip/knee surgery in the best of centres in USA, UK, Germany, France and HK.

In addition I do advanced arthroscopic work especially in the knee and ankle

I have special interest in trauma and over the years I have honed my skills to be competent to manage regular as well as complex trauma. I have and am using the latest and the best trauma systems available in the market today.

Recently I have been doing advanced Foot and Ankle work. This includes hallux deformities, fore foot deformities, mid and hind foot arthritis and post traumatic foot and ankle problems.
